Ch 9 - 11: "Maycomb's Disease"

How does Scout begin to experience racism in To Kill a Mockingbird throughout chapter 9?  Use at least two examples from the novel.  Finally, relate Scout's encounters with racism to the theme "loss of innocence."

28 comments:

  1. She starts toexperience racism in the town when her dad decides to help Tom Robinson in the case. Also her family members believe that her dad she not be defending a black man. An example is when her cousin francis says yo daddy a "nigger lover he love em niggers". And also Ms.Dubose when she says atticus is "disgracing the town defening a nigger."

  2. To acts of racism is when Cecil Jacobs said Atticus "defends niggers". Another act of racism is when cousin Francis said that Atticus is a " Nigger-lover''. Scout has lost her innocence because in the first act of rasicm, she punches Cecil. When Francis called atticus that mean word, scout locks Francis in the kitchen.

  5. Scout starts to see rasism through her life so far in many ways. One of the ways is when she was at school one of he class mates was calling Atticus a "n... lover" and being scout she stood up for him. But she was quickly told to stop the fighting by Atticus and she has to stop leting it get to her. Another way Scout was experincing racism was when she was walking past Mrs. Dubose house and she called Atticus a discrace to the town of Maycomb. This makes scout grow up quicker because she had to learn that the world is not a very good place and people will judge based on there bias. Because scout had to grow up earlier she sees that this time in her life will be hard.

  6. Scout begins to expierience racism in to kill a mockingbird throughout chapter 9
when people in her school start to call her a " nigger lover". On page 75 it says
'' do you affend" niggers", Atticus. I asked him that evening." Of course i do. Don't say nigger , Scout. That's common 's what everybody at school says." This shows that she has expierienced racism.

  7. Scout starts to experience racism in to kill a mockingbird in chapter 9 when Cecil Jacobs goes up to her and calls Atticus a "nigger lover". Another example is when Scout asks Atticus if he was a "nigger lover" and Atticus simple responds that he loves everybody. He doesn't want to tell Scout the truth, he is trying to teach her not to grow up to be like the town, racist and judgmental.

  8. Scout slowly starts to face racism in her life as she gets older. One of the ways this happens is that when Jem and Scout start walking by Mrs. Dubose's house, she screams rude comments about Atticus. Such as him not following his "teachings" and telling them he is defending trash. This was a major part of Scout seeing racism because it was by an adult. The second way Scout has seen racism is that her only cousin Francis called Atticus a "nigger-lover". Scount ended up getting in trouble for beating him up but it shows how even family were turning on Atticus and his children.

  9. Scout begins to experience racism in To Kill A Mockingbird by her cousin Francis calling Atticus a "nigger lover". Also when Cecil Jacobs says Atticus "defends niggers". Scout lost her innocence because she punches Cecil jacobs. When Francis called Atticus a "nigger lover" she experienced innocence by locking him in the kitchen for him saying that.... basically for revenge.

  10. Scout is losing her innocence because she is starting to see the world as it really is. Cecil Jacobs called her father a "nigger lover" and she didn't know what it meant but she knew it wasn't good by the way he said it. Even her cousin Francis said Atticus was a discrace of the family and that he was a "nigger lover". She is noticing that the world isn't always a safe and happy place for people that were not white.

  11. Scout begins to experience racism when he passes Mrs. Dubose's house. She says to Scout," don't you say hey to me, you ugly girl! You say good afternoon Mrs. Dubose!" Also on Christmas, Francis called Atticus a "nigger lover" and Scout beat him up. Scout is innocent and she is realizing that what people are saying about Atticus is true.

  12. Scout begins to expierence racism in the novel when Cecil Jacobs called Atticus a "nigger lover". Also when Mrs. Duboise said Atticus is just as low as the nigger trash he is defending. Scout used to be innocent and she didnt know about racism and Maycomb's racist disease. Now she knows she is more aware of racism in their town she loses her simplicity.

  13. Scout begins to start expierience racism in chapter 9. One example is when Scout's cousin Farncis said "he's nothing but a 'nigger lover'." This is refering to Atticus. Another example is when Cecil Jacobs and Scout got in a fight because Cecil announced to every one that "Scout's daddy defends niggers." This represents the theme loss of innocence because as Scout grows older and learns more about rasicm and experienced it more and she strarts to lose her innocence.

  14. One of the reasons is becuase Francis ( scout's cousin ) Francis called Atticus a nigger lover . And Scout already promised atticus she wouldn't let anybody get to her. "He's nothin ' but a nigger love''. P,83

  17. Scout begins to witness in chapters 9-11 from many people such as Ms.Debose and Francis to name 2. Scout witness racism from Francis at first when he firs calls Atticus a Nigger lover. Then soon after from Ms.Debose when she also calls Atticus a nigger lover and says that he should not be defending a black person like Tom Robinson

  18. Scout experiences racism in chapter nine when her cousin Francis calls her dad an "n lover" because he's defending Tom Robinson. She loses her innocence becuase she's grwoing up in a racist town, and she was raised to treat everyone equally unlike the rest of the people in Maycomb.

  19. In chapter 9, Cecil Jacobs called Atticus a "N-word lover" (not exact word). The second incounter that racism in front of her was when Francis called Atticus a "n-word lover."

  20. How Scout starts to notice racism because one example is Cecil Jacobs said her fathers defends black people and when Scout went home she asked Atticus that does he defends black people. "He had annonuced in the schoolyard the day that Scout Finch's daddy defended niggers. I denied it but, told jem." (To Kill A Mockingbird, chapter 9 page 74) in the dark blue book. a second example is when it was christmas time and the finch's went over to go eat and Scout saw her cousin Francis and Scout got in a fight with him because he called her father a "nigger lover" then Scout punched francis.

  21. Scout begins to experiense rascism in chapter 9 when the boy at her school, Ceciel Jacobs starts teasing Scout about Atticus defending a 'nigger'. She fought him before Atticus encoraged her to keep her head held high and ignore these comments. Another example is when Fransis, Scouts second couzin, came over for christmas and started calling Atticus a ' nigger lover' in a nasty way. Scout also fought him but kept the reason in secret because of not wanting Atticus to be disapointed in her.

  22. scout starts to experience racism in chapter 9-10 when franis calls NIGGER lover."He's nothing but a Nigger Lover." she experienced this while chilling with her cousin francis. they were playing around and then got serious and called her a nigger lover.

  23. Scout looses her innocence gradually in the novel, through a series of events. That began with the time Jem, Scout and Dill snuck onto the Radley property. When Nathan Radley finds out about this, he shoots at them and makes a racist comment, which Miss Stephanie Crawford repeats, "If you see a white nigger round here, thats him" also, another example of hoe Scout is losing her innocence is when her cousin, Francis calls Atticus a Nigger Lover for defending Tom Robinson .

  24. Scout thats experiences racism in chapter 9 when Cecil Jacobs was making fun of her calling her and dad a "nigger lover". Another one is when Mrs. Dubose told her not to say hey to her and was saying that there father is nothing but an "Nigger" himself.

  26. When Scout first encounters racism she was at her cousin Francis's house. He called her a "n***er lover" and also called her dad that. It states, " He's nothin but a n-lover". In chapter 11 she also incounters racism. Mrs. Debose also calls Atticus an n-lover. In the text it states, " she said you lawed for n***ers and trash". The third time she encounters it is when when it is used in the phrase white n***er. In the text it states, "Says if anybody see's a white n***er around, thats the one". She was talking from Nathan Radley's point of view. He was refering that his face was so pale since he scared him so hard.
